Michigan Window Tint Laws and Regulations
Window tint laws are designed to ensure drivers maintain safe visibility while still allowing some level of heat rejection and privacy. In Michigan, tint is generally allowed on the top portion of the windshield (often called a visorstrip) and on the rear side windows and rear window. Front side windows must remain largely unobstructed, though a small strip along the top of the windshield is permitted.
Michigan law typically allows a non-reflective tint on the top 4 inches of the windshield, while rear side windows and the rear window can be tinted to any darkness on most vehicles. Reflective or mirrored tint is not permitted, and tint cannot obstruct the driver’s clear view of the road.

Busting Common Window Tint Myths
Tint makes it hard to see at night
A common concern drivers have is that window tint will make night time driving difficult. In reality, modern carbon window tint is designed to reduce glare while still maintaining clear visibility. When the tint is installed within legal limits and applied correctly, most drivers notice little to no difference when driving at night.
All window tint is the same
Not all window tint films are created equal. Lower-quality dyed films are often inexpensive, but they tend to fade, bubble, or turn purple over time.Higher-quality carbon films, like the STEK Action Series used at Northern AutoSpa, are designed to maintain their color and performance while continuing to reduce heat and glare.
Window tint is only about looks
While window tint definitely improves the appearance of a vehicle, the benefits go well beyond style. Tint helps reduce interior heat, minimize glare from sunlight, and block harmful UV rays that can damage interior materials over time. For many drivers, the comfort and interior preservation benefits are just as valuable as the visual upgrade.
Darker tint is always better
Many people assume the darkest tint is automatically the best option, but that isn’t always the case. The right tint level depends on visibility preferences, local laws, and how the vehicle is used. Choosing the correct tint percentage ensures a good balance of comfort, appearance, and safe driving visibility.
